The Shipibo-Conibo Tradition

The Shipibo-Conibo are one of the largest and most spiritually vibrant indigenous peoples of the Peruvian Amazon, inhabiting the Ucayali River basin for thousands of years. They are recognized across the world as master healers, visionary artists, and keepers of one of the most sophisticated plant medicine traditions in existence.

At the heart of Shipibo cosmology is the understanding that all of reality is encoded in geometric patterns — the kené — which are simultaneously seen in ceremony, woven into textiles, and sung as healing songs. The Onanya, or master healer, learns to read, transmit, and restore these patterns as living medicine for the body, mind, and soul.

Pacha Inti Foundation is humbled to serve as a steward of this living transmission, honoring the curanderos and maestra healers of the Shipibo people as irreplaceable living sources of medicine for our time.

The Three Worlds

The Celestial Waters
Jene Nete

The Celestial Waters

The upper realm of sky spirits and cosmic intelligence. Source of the sacred geometric visions which flow down through the healer into material form. Home of the great luminous serpent.

This Living World
Nete

This Living World

The middle world of the Amazon — the great forest teeming with plant spirits, ancestors, and ceremony. Here the healer works, the icaros are sung, and the sacred relationship between human and plant is woven.

The Underworld
Nishi Nete

The Underworld

The hidden root world beneath the forest floor — realm of deep plant intelligence, ancestral memory, and transformation. Where the healer journeys to retrieve lost soul and encounter the teachings of the serpent.

The Healing Path

Four Pillars of Shipibo Wisdom

Icaro

Sacred Healing Song

The living medicine songs received directly from the plant spirits. Each icaro is a transmission of healing intelligence — sung to open, protect, and transform. The healer's most powerful tool.

Kené

Visionary Geometry

The sacred geometric patterns that encode cosmic knowledge. Seen in ceremony and woven into textiles, kené is the visual language of the spirit world — a map of the invisible made visible.

Dieta

The Sacred Fast

The deep apprenticeship with a plant teacher through extended isolation, dietary restriction, and silence. The primary method by which healers receive their gifts and enter into lasting relationship with plant intelligence.

Meraya

The Healer's Path

The high path of the fully initiated Shipibo healer — one who has mastered many icaros, completed many dietas, and can journey freely between worlds to retrieve, heal, and restore wholeness.

Core Teachings

🌿

Onanya

The Healer Who Knows

The Onanya is the keeper of plant wisdom and ceremonial song — one who has undergone years of dieta and devotion to become a living vessel for plant intelligence.

🌊

Niwe Rao

Medicine of the Waters

The teachings of flow, purification, and renewal carried by the water medicines of the Shipibo tradition. Niwe Rao speaks to the power of the river — ever moving, ever cleansing.

Kaya

The Luminous Thread

The luminous energy that animates all living beings — the invisible thread connecting body, spirit, and cosmos. In Shipibo healing, the Onanya works directly with Kaya: seeing it, singing it, restoring it when lost.

🔥

Shinon

Sacred Protection

The fortified boundaries of the healed and protected spirit body. Shinon is the living shield cultivated through ceremony, dieta, and right relationship.

🌙

Nete

Sacred Time

The cosmological cycle of the plant world — a living calendar that governs when to plant, when to heal, when to rest, and when to act.

🌺

Rao

The Plant Teachers

Every plant carries a spirit and a song. Rao — plant medicine — is not merely botanical substance but a sentient intelligence that chooses its relationship with the healer.
